Spearmint is a perennial herb that is a hardy branched with bright green, lance-shaped, sharply toothed leaves with pink or lilac-coloured flowers in slender cylindrical spikes. Native to the Mediterranean region but now common throughout Europe, Western Asia, and the Middle East. It was introduced to the USA where it became a popular flavouring. The oil is produced in the midwest USA, Hungary, Spain, Russia and China. It is primarily used as the main ingredient in toothpaste, chewing gum and sweets.
