Ho Leaf is particularly helpful to the nervous system, especially in helping with stress, anxiety and insomnia. It is excellent for inducing relaxation and a sense of calmness. It tackles feelings of frigidity and apathy, promoting a relaxed state of mind.
With a high linalool content (around 80-90%), Ho Leaf essential oil has a stimulating but soothing effect on the mind and body, helping to reduce fatigue and can help to balance emotions. It can also help reduce anxiety and have a relaxing effect.
Lis-Balchin states that Ho Leaf (linalool) has sedative properties and is a relaxant. (Lis-Balchin M, Aromatherapy Science – a guide for healthcare professionals. Pharmaceutical Press, London, 2006
Kerr says that Ho Leaf has an uplifting effect which is helpful in balancing emotions. It is recommended when one is feeling weary and overburdened with problems. It has an overall calming effect without causing drowsiness. (Kerr J, Ho leaf/rosewood, Aromatherapy Today 1998, P7: 6-9)
Lavender is generally calming and soothing to the mind helping sleep, and ease tension stress and emotional exhaustion. Davis says that the calming and relaxing qualities of lavender can help in reaching deeper states of meditation.
Lavender essential oil has been the focus of several clinical trials and has successfully been used in some hospitals as a massage oil and in a vapouriser to help dispel anxiety and help patients sleep.
With a fresh and clean scent juniper is associated with purification being used historically to drive out negative influences. It is recommended for individuals who are feeling burdened and deep within their thoughts – worries, pressures and anxieties. It is recommended for nervous and intellectual fatigue.
Davis suggests that Juniper can clear ‘waste’ from the mind.
This Oil offers emotional support and reduces physical and emotional signs of stress. Some sources claim that juniper is one of the most effective essential oils for dealing with inner trauma and pains because juniper may have positive effects on relaxation responses in the brain when inhaled. (Levy, 2018)
When in use the oil becomes a relaxant and sleep aid as the smell of juniper offers emotional support and reduces physical and emotional signs of stress. When inhaled juniper may have positive effects on relaxation responses in the brain. (Levy, 2018)
Overall, this essential oil added to this blend has the added benefit of a relaxant and sleep. Juniper essential oil is effective in nearly all forms of cramps by relaxing the muscles. (Nagdeve, 2021) making this a perfect choice to aid rest.
Geranium helps with tension, depression, irritability and anxiety as it has an excellent regulating effect on the nervous system. In aromatherapy, it may be used in a bath, massage or vaporisation to relieve stress, nervous tension, depression, headaches and anxiety. (Tisserand R. The art of aromatherapy. The C.W Daniel Company Limited, Great Britain, 1992.)
With a varied blend of chemistry, including alcohols, esters and aldehydes, geranium oil can help calm and relax, bringing on a feeling of well-being. Used in the bath before bedtime can encourage a good night's sleep.
Geranium is reportedly anxiolytic. Tasev, Toleva and Balabanova (1969) also reported that atomised geranium increased attention spans, concentration capacity and work rhythms, and shortened reflex times in 48 medical students (Price and Price, 2011).

Inhalation
Undiluted essential oils may be inhaled from a tissue or a pillow (4-6 drops). Alternatively, they can be inhaled from a bowl of hot water (3 or 4 drops) or a diffuser (see table below), but avoid this if asthmatic. Never inhale essential oils directly from the bottle.
Shampoo and Bath Foam
Create unique aromatherapy bath foams or shampoos by mixing up to 30 drops of your own essential oil blend into 100ml of a suitable bath foam base or shampoo base.
Skincare Cream
Essential oils can be added to vegetable-based creams and then developed into facial products or topical creams. Do not add more than 15 drops of essential oil to 50ml of your base cream.
Pregnancy
Essential oils are best avoided during the first months of pregnancy. After the third month, many oils can be used safely and effectively. If in doubt, always consult a qualified aromatherapist. Find out more in our blog, Aromatherapy & Pregnancy
