A very pale yellow oil Sunflower is light and slightly sweet. Organic oil is often used as the maceration medium for Calendula and other plants. Organically grown plants are cold-pressed to obtain the oil whereas non-organically grown plants are sold commercially in large quantities where the oil is refined by solvents.
Originating in South America, the flower was worshipped by the Aztecs as a representation of the sun. The plant was bought to Europe at the end of the 16th century. The plant requires a lot of water, they can be used to drain boggy areas. Before collection, the seeds are allowed to ripen in the flower head until they turn black.
