Blended With

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Roman Chamomile is calming and helps balance the menstrual whilst easing stress and encouraging sleep.

Massages of Roman chamomile for 20 minutes, 3 times a week were reported to significantly improve self-esteem and decrease the anxiety of cancer patients (Srivastava, Shankar and Gupta, 2010), supporting its use as a relaxant. Roman chamomile is reportedly spasmolytic, with numerous studies providing evidence for this property.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage is hormone-like and useful for menopausal symptoms scanty periods and depression. May help reduce sweating. And is reputedly good for mature and puffy skin.

Clary sage has been used for dysmenorrhea due to its reported antispasmodic and oestrogen-regulating properties and has been involved in several studies into the effect of aromatherapy in the relief of dysmenorrhea. In a study of 55 nurses, self-massage of a blend of essential oil including geranium and clary sage (as well as rose) in sweet almond, evening primrose and jojoba carrier oils for 10 minutes twice a day on the first and second days of menstruation was found to significantly reduce pain and anxiety scores compared to a placebo group and a control group of no treatment (Kim et al., 2011), suggesting that clary sage and geranium may be useful for reducing menstrual pain.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium has relaxing properties as well as being useful for helping breast congestion, stretch marks, fluid retention and cellulite, painful periods and menopausal symptoms.

Geranium has also been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic, which would also be useful for reducing water retention and oedema.

Geranium can help balance emotional extremes, with antidepressant properties it can help regulate nervous tension and hormone imbalances especially during menstruation and menopause. (Jane Dye, 1992, Aromatherapy for women and children)

Geranium is an adrenal cortex stimulant. The hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex are primarily regulators governing the balance of hormones secreted by other organs including female (and male) sex hormones, so it is greatly beneficial in menstrual problems and in cases with hormone imbalances. It can also be used for premenstrual tension.  (Patricia Davies, 1988.)

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is balancing, aids in relaxation. and is helpful against irregular periods.

Lavender is relaxing and has been shown to be antispasmodic, preventing the contraction of both intestinal and uterine smooth muscle, possibly doing so by increasing intracellular AMP within the muscle so it cannot contract. Lavender may, therefore, be useful against menstrual cramps. Lavender is also reportedly analgesic and diuretic. In a randomised controlled trial of 48 outpatients found that massage of clary sage and lavender (as well as marjoram) in an unscented white cream reported a significant reduction in the duration of pain during menstruation.

How to Use

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be used with care. The guidance below is a helpful starting point, but we recommend consulting a qualified aromatherapist for personalised advice. Need help? Call us on 01455 251020 or email [email protected]; we’re happy to help.

Inhalation
Undiluted essential oils may be inhaled from a tissue or a pillow (4-6 drops). Alternatively, they can be inhaled from a bowl of hot water (3 or 4 drops) or a diffuser (see table below), but avoid this if asthmatic. Never inhale essential oils directly from the bottle.

Shampoo and Bath Foam
Create unique aromatherapy bath foams or shampoos by mixing up to 30 drops of your own essential oil blend into 100ml of a suitable bath foam base or shampoo base.

Skincare Cream
Essential oils can be added to vegetable-based creams and then developed into facial products or topical creams. Do not add more than 15 drops of essential oil to 50ml of your base cream.

Pregnancy
Essential oils are best avoided during the first months of pregnancy. After the third month, many oils can be used safely and effectively. If in doubt, always consult a qualified aromatherapist. Find out more in our blog, Aromatherapy & Pregnancy
