My story with aromatherapy began with my mum, Shirley. Back in 1974, she was looking for a way to help my grandma, who suffered terribly from arthritis since her 30s. My Granddad had tried several ways in which to help her with the pain and inflammation this caused, such as a masseur, Naturopathy and Spa treatments, all of which helped for a few short days but after consultation she was given cortisone. Nothing further could be done, so she continued to be in pain from her swollen joints and on bad days was unable to walk. In addition to all this, long use of cortisone made her skin become so thin that she bruised with even the slightest pressure.

One day, mum noticed an advert in a Beauty Therapy magazine about a aromatherapy that’s said it would be able to help clients suffering from health problems like arthritis. After some research Shirley made a lotion containing anti-inflammatory and analgesic oils plus two others to help her dry skin, which she applied nightly on her hands, lower legs and ankles.
Mum's interest in aromatherapy blossomed. Soon, she was learning all about it, mixing and blending her own concoctions, with help from me and my brother Matt. We started making everything in our house's utility room. Demand demand soon grew, leading us to also formulate a range of products to help problems such as arthritis, cramp, migraines, PMS etc. By 1979, I was as hooked on aromatherapy as Mum. I took a training course and became more involved in the family business. Mum, ever the pioneer, started teaching aromatherapy classes in 1986. In 1998, with Mum and Dad (Len) ready to retire, they sold Shirley Price Aromatherapy, which had become a well-respected name in the industry to a third party.
In 2003, I founded the Penny Price Aromatherapy and the Academy of Aromatherapy, with Mum and Dad as consultants. We originally started out in a stable block at our family home Spa Villa in Hinckley. My vision was to elevate the worlds perception of aromatherapy by producing only the very finest essential oils, aromatherapy products, skin and body care – and is still our vision today. For years, I spent countless hours hand-blending every recipe until the aroma and consistency were perfect. We developed over 400 different aromatherapy products, including an updated version of Mum's original arthritis lotion – the reason for the journey into aromatherapy.
By 2004, Penny Price Aromatherapy was gaining recognition for its excellent training courses and hand blended products, just like my mum's company before it. And just like Mum, I realised I needed help managing everything. So, I asked my daughter, Ellie, to join the business.
Ellie qualified clinical aromatherapist in 2012 and after having her children, she took on various roles in the company over the years and in February 2023, our 20th anniversary year, she took over as Managing Director! But that hasn't slowed me down one bit. Ellie and I are constantly researching new oils and ways to help people with their ailments – the aromatherapy bug is contagious! My Nurture Mobility Lotion is a blend of Rosemary (analgesic, anti-inflammatory and mucolytic), Sweet Marjoram (analgesic and calming, alleviates stress and tension), Juniper (helps dispel uric acid from joints) and Lavender (analgesic and anti-inflammatory) Essential Oils, a body lotion to maintain the mobility and health of joints and muscles. While originally intended for arthritis, this non-greasy formula is great for all kinds of aches and pains, for all ages.
My Daughter Ellie, Now the Managing Director of Penny Price Aromatherapy
Arthritis can run in families, and unfortunately, it's something that has affected mine. Despite not being able to help my Grandma, my mum, with my help, has been able to manage her own condition. Now in her 90s, she's still living a full, active life, which she credits to a positive attitude and, of course, the Nurture Mobility Lotion. Ellie and I use it daily too, mainly on our hands and knees, to keep our joints healthy and reduce inflammation and pain.
Today, Penny Price Aromatherapy has a beautiful new home at Tungsten Park, with academy locations and product outlets around the world. We're renowned for our professional aromatherapy training and organic, handcrafted aromatherapy products. Even all these years later, our most popular product remains the Nurture Mobility Lotion – a family favourite that continues to hold a special place in our hearts.
Your Path To Better Mobility
The NHS states that there is increasing evidence that sitting down too much can be a risk to your health.
Studies have linked being inactive with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death. Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, and blood pressure and break down body fat. Our Nurture Mobility Lotion is here to help keep you moving and enhance your joint and muscle health heres how:
