A yellow to orange liquid with a faint blue fluorescence that holds a strong fresh woody aroma.

It is a large tuberous root and leaves that extend upward from erect thick stems that grow to around 1m high. The plant holds a deep orange core and dull yellow leaves. It is native to southern Asia and extensively cultivated in India, China, Indonesia, Jamacia and Haiti. Closely related to Ginger but it is not to be confused with the Indian Turmeric or American yellow root.

Used in India for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties in homemade medicines. It is also known as “The Golden Spice” it is used as a domestic spice around the world particularly in curry powder. In Chinese herbalism it is used for bruises, sores, ringworm, toothache, chest pains, colic and menstrual problems.

Turmeric contains the ketone turmerone which has potential irritating and toxic effects when used in large concentrations. Use in moderation and with care for a limited time period.
