Description

Rose | Latin name: Rosa damascena | Aromatic waters by distillation of Flower Petals | Plant family: Rosaceae

A small and prickly shrub between 1 metre and 2 metres high. It has pink very fragrant flowers with thirty-six petals and white-like hairy leaves. Believed to be native of the Orient but is now cultivated in Turkey and France. Similar types are grown in China, India and Russia however, India produces only rose water – a mixture of RoseOtto and Sandalwood.

Hydrolats, aromatic waters produced by steam distillation of botanical materials during the production of essential oils. Hydrolats are gentle and effective, containing only the most water-soluble chemicals from the plant material, also microscopic drops of the essential oils.

Properties

Rose hydrolat has many properties it is: Antifungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiviral, balancing, calming, stimulating and uplifting.

Very good to blend with cosmetics and a great all-around facial toner and pore tightener.

Methods of Use

Skin Treatments
Use hydrolats as cleansers, toners, to make masks and for facial spritzers.  Either use 50/50 with purified water or undiluted.

Room Freshener
Spray liberally around pets, cooking areas, bedrooms and other areas of your environment.  Particularly useful in the office to help prevent the spread of disease.

Mouthwash & Gargle
Dilute 1:10 for children and 1:4 for adults for gargles and mouthwashes to help strengthen gums, freshen breath, relieve sore throats, ulcers, thrush and toothache.

Baths
Add up to 100mls to an adult bath and 50mls to a child’s bath.  Hydrolats can also be used in sitz baths for thrush, candida, haemorrhoids, constipation, vaginal spasm and other complaints.

Compress
Soak a cloth in hydrosol and compress to the area being treated.  For a cold compress use a cold cloth and for hot, use a hot cloth.  Wrap up the area with plastic film and leave for 30 minutes.  A hot or cold water bottle can be used to enhance the effects.

Health Drink
To help promote a healthy, balanced body, dilute 200mls of hydrolat into 1 litre of water and drink throughout the day.  Also suitable for babies and children in smaller amounts, up to 500mls per day.

Herbal Tradition & Folklaw

Rose is one of the oldest scents in perfumery, oldest and best known. Homer describes how Aphrodite anoints the body of Hector in with Rose oil. Two thousand years ago, Nero built a palace with ceilings of fretted ivory and panels that released Rose petals and perfume.
