Petitgrain Essential Oil is a pale yellow liquid with a fresh, floral-citrus aroma with a woody undertone.

It is an evergreen tree up to 10 metres high, this orange tree with glossy, dark green leaves from which the essential oil is distilled, it has very fragrant flowers. Native to Southern China and North East India. The best quality of this oil comes from France but good quality oil is also produced in North Africa, Paraguay and Haiti. Another type of oil is produced from the leaves, twigs and unripe fruit of, lemon, sweet orange, mandarin and bergamot trees.


Blends well with Orange, Neroli, Geranium, Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Lemon, Clary Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Jasmine and Juniper Berry.

Petitgrain is antibacterial, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and balancing.  In practice, it is used for acne, oily skin, boils and other infectious skin diseases.  It is also effective against respiratory infections and helps to contain the spread of such.  Petitgrain is calming and also energising to the nervous system and is used for anxiety, panic attacks and mild depression.

Herbal & Folk Tradition

A classic ingredient of eau de cologne.  The oil used to be extracted from the tiny, green unripe oranges and hence the name ‘petitgrain’ which means ‘little grains’.

Safety Data & MSDS

No known contra-indications.  The common name ‘petitgrain’ is used as a general term for oils distilled from the leaves of citrus trees and so the oil should be specified to indicate that it is indeed from the bitter orange tree.
