Essential Oil Properties & Meanings

Herbal & Folk Tradition

Appears to have a connection with warding off evil spirits, the juice of the leaves once made an excellent gargle for mouth sores. Throughout the centuries the sap has been used to make medicinal wine and the leaves made into a diuretic tea. The flavour of wintergreen and birch bark in the form of tea was popular with the American Indians and European settlers. More recently this has been translated into a preference for “root beer” flavourings.
