Steam distilled from the nut, Nutmeg has a sweet, warm, spicy odour. Nutmeg is cleansing and good for confidence building.

It is an evergreen tree with dense foliage, greyish-brown smooth bark and small dull-yellow flowers growing up to 20 meters high. The oil is distilled in Europe and the USA from imported nutmegs. Indonesia and Sri Lanka produce the East Indian type which is considered superior. Grenada produces West Indian type. The essential oil is produced by steam distillation from the nutmeg seed or the dried aril. An oleoresin is also produced by solvent extraction of the mace.
