Sage Hydrolat
|
Traditionally sage has been called 'the sacred herb'. The herb, essential oil and hydrolat have been used for many disorders including respiratory infections, menstrual conditions and digestive disorders. It is mentioned in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for inflammations of the mouth and throat.
One of the main uses of the hydrolat is for women who have menstrual problems. Sage hydrolat is naturally high in steroids and can be most useful for relieving the pain of periods and of endometriosis. The hydrolat and the essential oil can be used to stimulate menstruation where there is a lack of regular periods or irregularity in the cycle. This can be most useful for women who have irregular periods and who want to regulate in order to become pregnant. Sage during the menopause is also useful for helping to balance the system and reduce hot flushes and can help to calm an irritated mind.
In addition, sage hydrolat can be taken as a digestive aid, where it may allay hunger and help with weight loss. Sage is also a circulatory stimulant, a diuretic and a restorative when energy levels are low.
The hydrolat is a strong antioxidant; excellent in anti-aging treatments and creams.
Menopausal treatments Dilute 25ml sage hydrolat with 25ml boiled and cooled water. Use in an atomiser spray to help cope with hot flushes. Use 50mls in the bath to relax the mind and to help balance the body. Dilute 100mls in 500mls boiled water and drink 20mls of the fluid every four hours to help with flushes, pain, irregularity and painful breasts.
Weight control Dilute 100mls sage hydrolat with 100mls warm boiled water. Drink 50mls of the blend 20 minutes before each meal to allay hunger and aid slow metabolism. Since the blend is also diuretic, water is less likely to be retained in stubborn fatty areas,
Anti-aging night cream Blend 70mls of heavy cream base with 20mls of sage hydrolat and 10mls of evening primrose oil. Add essential oils of lavender and palmarosa if required (5 drops of each).
Period pains Soak a piece of gauze or fine cotton in 50mls of warm sage hydrolat and place over the lower abdomen or in the small of the back depending upon where the pain is felt. Leave for 30 minutes before removal. To keep the compress warm use a wheat bag if necessary.
