![Rosemary Hydrolat]() | Rosemary Hydrolat | A common European herb, this bushy plant has spiky leaves and prefers stony, well-drained soil conditions. There are many different strains of rosemary but the hydrolat is usually taken from common rosemary - Rosmarinos officinalis.
Rosemary as a herb and hydrolat (infusion) was used in ancient times to protect against evil spirits and the plague. It was used to stimulate and improve digestion and in beauty preparations for the hair to make it shine and improve the texture.
In France, rosemary hydrolat is used as a mental and physical stimulant and is taken with water to help improve the memory. It can also used as a coffee substitute because of its strong effect as a mental stimulant. As a drink with water it can ease hunger and so is perfect as an aid to a slimming diet. Rosemary hydrolat is a strong anti-oxidant and can be used in cosmetics or as a drink as an anti-aging agent. Great in hair products, the water can be added to shampoos, conditioners and hair masks to encourage thicker growth and shinier hair. Rosemary hydrolat is a perfect toner for oily skin and acne used just on its own or with water.
Besides being a mild circulatory stimulant, rosemary hydrolat, warm or cool, makes a delicious drink.
Hair mask and rinse Take 100mls of aqueous cream and carefully add 20mls of jojoba oil. When thoroughly mixed, add 20mls of rosemary hydrolat and 10 drops of rosemary essential oil. Apply to clean, dry hair and leave for up to 3 hours to thoroughly nourish and stimulate the hair and scalp. Wash the hair thoroughly afterwards and rinse with 50mls of rosemary hydrolat. Leave the hydrolat on the hair for the best effect.
Anti-oxidant pro-memory drink Dilute rosemary hydrolat 50/50 with boiled water and freeze in ice-cube trays. Make up 100mls hydrolat and 500mls cool boiled water and serve with rosemary leaves and ice cubes. A perfect summer drink!
Circulatory stimulant Use 50mls of rosemary hydrolat in a warm bath and rest for 20 minutes. The hydrolat will stimulate and encourage a sluggish circulation and lymphatic system for general good health. Another way would be to add 20mls of hydrolat to 80mls of a bland carrier lotion to apply after a shower in swift, strong, upward movements. | | |
