Peppermint Hydrolat
|
This common garden herb is one of many mint varieties. It grows to around 2 feet high and is very aromatic. Peppermint has been used in many forms throughout history for digestive problems of all varieties. The herb, hydrolat and essential oil has also been used for toothache, headache and muscular cramps.
Peppermint has a wide range of therapeutic uses and is a versatile hydrolat to keep in the kitchen and bathroom cupboards. It is cooling to the skin and so is very useful for hot flushes, after shaving, sunburn and irritable skin. In France it is used in a spray by women hoping to tone their bust-line and it is a moderate anti-oxidant and so helps to delay aging.
Peppermint hydrolat is very beneficial for the digestive system and can help with the spasms of colitis, diverticulitis and indigestion. It can also help as a daily digestive aid to prevent heartburn and discomfort.
The hydrolat is quite strong to the taste and so should be always diluted before ingestion. However, it makes delicious ice cubes to add to summer drinks such as Pimms or Gin.
Being quite uplifting and anti-depressive, peppermint hydrolat is recommended as a regular drink and it can also be used as a mouthwash to prevent gum disease and to promote healthy teeth and gums.
