Mustard Seed (Brassica nigra)
Mustard seed originates in Europe and Asia and annually grows 3 feet upwards with pale yellow flowers appearing in the summer followed by angled pods containing brown seeds. These seeds are cold pressed to produce the oil which is dark yellow and has a pungent odour. Dijon in France is a centre for the mustard trade and it is used in baths for aching feet and poultices for neuralgia and tooth ache. Mustard seed is circulatory stimulant, good for cold limbs, irritant, anti-arhritic and analgesic, good for aching feet and chilblains. Mustard seed will keep for up to 2 years in a cool, dark, airtight place.
